GOVERNOR’S COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR JOINS BUSH COMMITTEE

Gov. MARC RACICOT announced today that Andrew Malcolm, his Executive Assistant and Director of Communications since the Governor took office in January, 1993, would depart this summer to become a senior communications strategist for the Presidential Exploratory Committee of Texas Governor George W. Bush.

"Naturally, we will miss Andy’s expertise and company," the Governor said. "I am very pleased that our choice as the Republican Party’s Presidential nominee now has chosen one of ours to help with the vast undertaking of becoming the next President of the United States. It is also gratifying to know that Andy will carry the Rocky Mountain intuitions of our Administration and state, as well as his contacts and impressive communications skills, into a likely national campaign. We wish him and Gov. Bush good luck and look forward to working with both of them in the months ahead."

Governor Racicot said Governor Bush first talked with him about Malcolm during a National Governors Association meeting in Washington in February. Last month Governor Bush sought permission to discuss a possible position for Malcolm, who visited Austin recently. Governor Racicot also visited Austin June 6-7 for meetings with Gov. Bush and his staff.

Previously, Malcolm spent 26 years on The New York Times as a bureau chief in Japan, Canada and Chicago, foreign and national correspondent in San Francisco, Vietnam, Thailand and Korea and as an assistant editor and columnist in New York. He won several national and company journalism awards and is the author of 10 nonfiction books.

Malcolm’s new duties in Austin will include coordinating Bush state press operations and surrogate speakers, as well as assisting in writing, editing and facilitating the information flow to national media. His title will be Deputy Communications Manager. Malcolm will begin his new assignment in July, according to Karen Hughes, Gov. Bush’s Communications Director..

I also appreciate the willingness of my good friend, Gov. Racicot, for whom Andy works, to allow him to leave his office and join my exploratory effort."

Malcolm said: "I am, of course, honored that Gov. Bush would want my help on his team. I deeply appreciate the introduction to public service that Gov. Racicot has provided me for six and a half years. I am a better person for knowing and working with him. We were and will always remain close friends. I eagerly anticipate carrying forward our mutual commitment to Gov. Bush and his style of open, inclusive government. Both governors are very similar in many ways. And I believe the American people will soon share our enthusiasm as they come to know the Texas Governor even better starting this weekend in Iowa. My goal would be to help facilitate that process."
