HELENA -- Gov. MARC RACICOT today announced his appointment of Donald "Louis" Clayborn as Montana's new Coordinator of Indian Affairs.
Gov. Racicot, in naming the Helena resident, stated, "Having held this job before in the Schwinden Administration, Mr. Clayborn will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Office of Indian Affairs. I believe Mr. Clayborn will again prove to be very effective in performing the duties of Coordinator."
In his new position, Mr. Clayborn will act as the official liaison between the state and Montana's tribal governments. His nomination for the position came from the Fort Belknap Tribe; all nominations were reviewed by the Montana Tribal Leaders Council and then forwarded to Gov. Racicot for his consideration.
Mr. Clayborn held the position of Indian Affairs Coordinator from 1982 - 1989. He was most currently Executive Director of the Montana United Indian Association, and Montana Area Director of the Christian Children's Fund from 1994 - 1998. Mr. Clayborn has a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Montana in education and has worked toward a master's degree in public administration from U of M.
Mr. Clayborn has worked for a variety of Indian-related health and education programs across the state, serving as director or consultant. He has also served on several committees and boards, including the Governor's Advisory Council on Aging, the Native American Studies Review Committee, and the Public Health Service Urban Indian Health Resources Task Force.
Mr. Clayborn will succeed Wyman McDonald, who recently retired.
