The U.S. Senate confirmed Montana Governor Marc Racicot to serve on the Board of Directors of the Corporation for National Service.
Racicot, of Helena, Montana, was elected as Governor of Montana in 1992, and re-elected in 1996. In 1993, the Montana legislature approved Racicot's request to create a State Office of Community Service. Since the National and Community Service Trust Act was approved by the U.S. Congress in 1993, Montana has actively participated in the development of AmeriCorps service programs across the state. Racicot is the national chair of Jobs for America's Graduates, and is a member of the Board of Directors of the United Way. Racicot is a graduate of Carroll College in Helena, and earned a J.D. degree from the University of Montana Law School.
Created in 1993, the Corporation for National Service engages more than a million Americans of all ages and backgrounds in service to their communities. Through its three service initiatives - AmeriCorps, the National Senior Service Corps, and Learn and Serve America - the Corporation provides opportunities for Americans to meet critical challenges in the areas of education, public safety, the environment, and other human needs.
More than 13,000 people of all ages and backgrounds are helping to solve problems and strengthen communities through 38 national service projects across Montana. Serving through local nonprofits, schools, religious organizations and other organizations, these citizens tutor and mentor children, coordinate after-school programs, build homes, organize neighborhood watch groups, clean parks, recruit volunteers, and accomplish other things to improve communities. This year, the Corporation for National Service will provide more than $3,800,000 to support Montana communities.
